Methyl Bromide is a favored choice for fumigating a range of items, including timber, agricultural products, empty containers, and various foodstuffs. It leaves no residual issues, as aeration is easily achievable. Its potency extends to insects at all stages of development, from egg to adult.

As per international plant protection standards, Methyl Bromide is an approved fumigant for treating export cargo containing wooden packing materials. However, it's important to note that fumigants only address existing infestations and do not offer residual protection against potential re-infestation. Thus, treated timber must be packed in containers or shipped within 21 days to prevent cross infestation. Proper storage and hygiene practices are vital during this period, especially when repacking agricultural products.

Methyl Bromide has some limitations, as it can be absorbed by oils, fats, and finely ground materials. It may also react with sulfur-containing substances, leading to undesirable discoloration and odors, even after prolonged aeration. In such cases, alternative treatments may be considered.

Fumigation of Wooden Crates involves using Methyl Bromide at a dosage of 48 grams per cubic meter. The process includes placing wooden packing crates in fumigation covers, sealing them air-tight, and administering the required dosage. Gas concentration is monitored during the exposure period, which typically lasts for 24 hours. Afterward, the crates undergo aeration.

In India, rubberwood is commonly used for packing, though kiln-dried pine wood is considered ideal for this purpose. Methyl Bromide fumigation is crucial for various packing materials, including wooden crates, skids, and plant materials like straw and rice hulls, which can harbor exotic insect pests and diseases. It's essential to treat wooden crates with Methyl Bromide before shipment, ensuring the packing wood's thickness does not exceed 200 mm.
